The unity of language is facilitating the moral decay of the post-flood world; it is in danger of becoming just like the ante-deluvian world. So God acts: He confuses the language to prevent the iniquity of the world from spiraling out of hand. It is an act of judgment, but it is also an act of mercy.

The variety and diversity of the nations, each with its own history and customs, reflects the glory of our Triune God – a God in whom unity and diversity exist in harmony.

It is easy to use the law to speak judgment on others, but God speaks grace and mercy on those who deserve death. 

The flood narrative is a story of de-creation and re-creation, of death and resurrection. The old world dies and all flesh with it; a new world rises from the grave and takes shape through the work of God.

God’s judgment inevitably falls on apostates. God will not have his Name mocked. He is patient; he often delays punishment; he delays punishment to see if folks will respond to His Word and repent. But if there is no repentance, then God will move in judgment and His judgment will fall swiftly and surely.
