While scripture is clear that God’s elect will not drift away, the church does not have access to the list of the chosen. In order to follow the command of Hebrews 2:1-4, we must continuously guard our own hearts and exhort those around us to do the same.

Paul opens his letter by answering the central question “Who is this Jesus?” A distinction is drawn between his identity and his earthly ministry. Prior to his life on earth, He is the Maker, the Glory of God, and the Upholder. As a consequence of his earthly ministry, He also assumes the titles of Prophet, Priest, and King.

Just as the “Aha!” moment of the detective story shows the true importance of the previously unintelligible details, the coming of Jesus revealed the full meaning of the Old Testament.

The overarching theme of the book of Hebrews is the necessity of perseverance. We must continue in the things we have learned. We must cling to Christ and serve Him. We dare not presume on His grace but daily entreat Him for strength and faith to trust His promises and lay hold of the prize for which Christ laid hold of us.
